Apprenticeship Update - Summer 2017

Apprenticeship Update - Summer 2017

30 June 2017

There have been significant changes introduced from 1st May this year that have impacted on the funding and make up of apprenticeships in the motor industry.

Large employers with an annual payroll bill of £3m or more are now paying 0.5% of their payroll to HMRC as an apprenticeship levy and although smaller employers aren’t required to pay the levy they may need to contribute towards training costs. There are a number of incentive payments built in to the funding model which favour smaller employers and all employers receive £1000 incentive for recruiting a 16-18 year old apprentice (in England only).

REMIT has been running the new level 3 Light Vehicle Apprenticeship Standard which is replacing the previous apprentice frameworks for the past 12 months. The initial pilot had 8 learners from IGA member garages, and it’s now being rolled-out to all employers this Summer.

The REMIT 3 year apprentice programme is designed for businesses that carry out the full range of servicing, maintenance, complex diagnostics and repair, and includes a total of 15 weeks block release training at the REMIT training Academy in the East Midlands. These are carried out in 5 blocks of one week for each year of the programme.

The cost to the employer for the REMIT programme is from £20 per month (for a 16 to 18 year old apprentice), and entry requirements are a minimum of GCSE grade C in maths and English. All apprentice accommodation costs are included but the employer will need to pay travel costs to and from the training academy for the fifteen weeks of block training (transport from the accommodation to the academy is provided by Remit).

The new Standard is geared up to develop an apprentice’s skills and knowledge across the 3 years and culminates with an End Point Assessment, where they will be independently assessed over a 2-day period of practical and theory tests in order to complete their apprenticeship..

The £1,000 incentive payment is made to employers in two payments of £500, one paid after 3 months and the final payment after 12 months

This is the best time of year to select the best available apprentice for your business, and Remit can pre-select potential apprentices for interview.
