Autodata Technical Issue 12 – Poor Engine Performance and Juddering from 2011 Volkswagen UP!

28 February 2018

Each month the Autodata team answers a common technical question and provides a printable document with technical diagrams to download and keep, exclusively for IGA members. This month a cause can’t be found for a Volkswagen UP! With poor engine performance.

Q. A 2011 Volkswagen UP! we look after is suffering from poor engine performance and sometimes engine juddering. Trouble codes P0010, P0016, P0088 and P0341 are stored so we have checked the fuel pressure, the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors but can’t find any fault. Can you help?

A. This problem not only affects the UP! but also Golf VII, Jetta and Polo models from around 2011 fitted with the 1,2 and 1,4 TSI engines. The source of the fault is debris in the camshaft position (CMP) oil pressure valve located on the cylinder head (Fig 1.1).

Remove the CMP oil pressure valve and check for debris (Fig 1.2). Thoroughly clean the valve using clean engine oil. Before refitting the valve flush the corresponding cylinder head orifice with clean engine oil. Erase the trouble codes and road test the vehicle to confirm the fault is fixed.
