Autodata Technical Issue 23 – Squeaking noise from engine compartment on 2011 Audi A1 1.6 TDI
Each month the Autodata team answers a common technical question and provides a printable document with technical diagrams to download and keep, exclusively for IGA members. This month, a customer’s Audi A1’s has a squeaking noise coming from the engine compartment.
Q. We are having trouble finding the cause of a squeaking/rubbing noise from the engine compartment when pulling away or driving over uneven surfaces on a 2011 Audi A1 1.6 TDI. We have visually checked all of the steering and suspension components and checked that the engine mounting bolts are tight. Are you aware of any problems of this type?
A. We are aware of this problem which is caused by excessive friction between the LH upper gearbox mounting rubber and mounting body. Access the gearbox mounting, slacken the mounting bolts and apply a small amount of silicon grease to the areas where rubber and metal are in contact (Fig 1).
Retighten the gearbox mounting bolts and carry out a road test to confirm the noise is no longer present.
