Autodata Technical Issue 27 – Abnormal noise from front suspension on 2009 Hyundai i30
Each month the Autodata team answers a common technical question and provides a printable document with technical diagrams to download and keep, exclusively for IGA members. This month, a Hyundai i30 has a noise coming from the front suspension with no obvious cause.
Q. We are having difficulty finding the source of an abnormal noise from the front suspension on a customer’s 2009 Hyundai i30. We have checked all of the suspension components but can’t find any excessive wear. Are you aware of this problem?
A. Yes, this has been reported by other i30 owners and affects models from the start of production up to 31/05/2010. The problem is due to movement between the front shock absorber damper rod cover and the front suspension upper mounting bush. Pull down the shock absorber damper rod cover and thoroughly clean the damper rod cover top and upper mounting bush (Fig 1.1).
Apply an appropriate sealant to the upper outside edge of the shock absorber damper rod cover and refit (Fig 1.2). Carry this procedure out on both front shock absorber damper rod covers. Road test the vehicle to confirm the noise is no longer present.
