Autodata Technical Issue 33 - Diesel smell in 2010 Toyota Auris
Each month the Autodata team answers a common technical question and provides a printable document with technical diagrams to download and keep, exclusively for IGA members. This month, a solution is found for a Toyota Auris that smells of diesel.
Q. We are experiencing a problem with a 2010 Toyota Auris 2,0 Diesel. There is a Diesel smell in the passenger compartment when driving and the engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is illuminated. A trouble code relating to fuel leak is stored in the fault memory. We have inspected the fuel lines in the engine bay and can smell Diesel but we cannot locate a leak. Have you any ideas as to the cause?
A. Yes, we have seen this before and the fault affects Corolla, Auris and Avensis models with 2,0 and 2,2 Diesel engines. The cause is the high-pressure fuel pump leaking. Inspect the production date on the high-pressure fuel pump (Fig 1).
If the production date is before 02/2010 (01M 02700) then replace the high-pressure fuel pump with a modified version. Erase any stored trouble codes. Road test the vehicle to ensure there is no diesel odour in the passenger compartment.
