Autodata Technical Issue 34 – Creaking noise from 2011 Kia Rio
Each month the Autodata team answers a common technical question and provides a printable document with technical diagrams to download and keep, exclusively for IGA members. This month, the source of a creaking noise coming from within a Kia Rio is found and fixed.
Q. We are having trouble finding the cause of a creaking noise on a 2011 Kia Rio 1,4 CRDi. The noise only occurs when turning corners at low speed and is coming from the front suspension area. We have tried without success to get the car to make the noise in the workshop but it only happens when it is driven. All of the steering and suspension bolts are tight and we are at a loss as to where else to look. Has anyone reported this noise before?
A. We are aware of the problem you are describing. The noise emanates from the contact area of the driveshaft and front hub wheel bearing. Remove the driveshaft from the front hub and, if fitted, remove and discard the plastic washer (Fig 1).
Fit a new metal washer available from a Kia dealer. Refit the driveshaft. Fit a new driveshaft retaining nut and tighten to 196-254 Nm.
