Bangers 4 BEN 2018 – 10th anniversary highlights

31 October 2018

This year’s Bangers4BEN is the 10th anniversary of the now-legendary event, where 50 teams drive around Europe in a car worth less than £750 to raise money for automotive charity, BEN.

Ben is an independent charity and dedicated partner to the automotive industry, providing support for life for its people and their family dependents. It is focused on delivering care and support to enable total health & wellbeing through working and later life.

The IGA’s intrepid team - comprised of Member Services Managers Frank Harvey and Paul Darwell - cruised through Europe in their very own ‘Safety Car’, a Mercedes 200 SLK Kompressor kindly donated to us by Tom of Poplar Motors in York.

Frank said of the event: “I terms of highlights I guess there were many, from a grass covered Volvo estate to a Noddy Car, a Pub in a Van, Mr Bean driving from an armchair on the roof of a Mini - and pretty much anything in-between!”

Frank also detailed the events of the trip: “We started with group photos on the historic banking of the Brooklands racing circuit, but then getting used to driving on the wrong side of the road was interesting! Day 2 had us travelling through spectacular French countryside, and day 3 was set up to be racing at the Nürburgring - but it was shut due to fog!”

At the start of day 4 the final, mystery location at which the Bangers would finish was provided - Rockingham race circuit, where the Bangers would have to undertake some ‘Top Gear’ style challenges. The Safety Car’s 0-60 time was a respectable 7.9 seconds, but reports say Frank’s hand brake turns left something to be desired.

Frank said: “All in all a very enjoyable event that was very well organised. The AA team were on hand for any breakdowns that occurred along the way - of which there were a few - but thankfully we didn’t have cause to call on their services, and all was done for a great cause.

“I must add the Banger rules say that if you have a convertible car it has to be ‘roof down’ all the way - and we did!”

The IGA’s Bangers 4 BEN Road Trip may be over, but the fundraising doesn’t stop until our Banger is sold! We have raised £510 out of our £2,000 target so far, so please keep donating via our Just Giving page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/iga-b4b18.
