CTSI Business Companion - Free, Impartial Legal Guidance for Businesses

30 September 2016

As a business do you know what your legal obligations are to consumers?

What would happen if a customer comes in and demands a refund, would you know what you would have to do? What about if you sell a car at a distance (over the phone or over the internet) would you have to give the purchaser a cooling-off period?

For answers to these questions and many others, the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI), with backing from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BIES) Business Companion, has created the website www.businesscompanion.info to provide all businesses with access to free, up to date information on trading standards laws.

The site is split into three areas :

The Basics, which will help decide which rules apply to you.

Concise Guidance, For when you need quick answers to questions

Detailed Information, For in-depth guidance

The content is written and reviewed regularly by CTSI Practitioners.

The website is a quick way of finding out trusted and reliable information on your obligations, but if you do need further advice, contact details for your local Trading Standards Service can be found in the FAQ section of the site.

There is even a specific quick guide for used car sales which is a good link to keep in your bookmarks for when you need it.

Remember that Trust My Garage has been approved by CTSI’s Consumer Code Approval Scheme. This means that if you are a member, the backing can help you advertise your business as trustworthy, and give your customers extra protection beyond their consumer rights. Your garage will also be listed on the official CTSI consumer website. If you’re not a TMG member yet and would like to find out more, please call us on 0845 305 4230.
