Member Service Spotlight: Health and Safety

31 July 2017

In any garage business Health and Safety compliance is of vital importance. Ensuring the safety of your technicians and your customers should be a top priority when it comes to running your business.

Luckily for independent garages, the RMI offers a Health and Safety subscription to members, to help you keep your business up-to-date with the complex legislative demands placed upon modern repair businesses. By utilising your RMI membership, you can keep up with latest legislation and proactively develop the safety culture in your business.

The RMI’s Health and Safety Service ensures the safety and protection of you, your staff and your customers by providing a structured assessment and monitoring system designed to cater specifically for independent garages. In order to ensure your garage remains a step ahead, the RMI will carry out an inspection of your premises, then provide an action plan to help you comply with Health & Safety and environmental legislation. After your initial inspection, we will then carry out regular and on-going visits to update your documentation and keep you up to date with latest legislation.

As part of the service, along with regular visits you’ll also receive a range of checks and equipment designed to keep your business’ Health and Safety requirements up-to date. This includes:

  • Risk Assessment
  • COSHH Assessment
  • Fire Risk Assessment
  • Equipment Log and Record of Maintenance
  • Health & Safety Accident Book
  • Health & Safety Legislation Updates
  • List of Substances/Data Sheet Check
  • Health & Safety Policy & Policy Statement
  • PPE Form
  • Health & Safety Recommendations
  • Health & Safety 24hr Helpline
  • Fire Log

HSE and Fee for Intervention costs

Maintaining an active Health and Safety presence is more important for garages than ever, as a HSE inspection can be a costly expense. HSE rules mean that an inspection could potentially cost £129 per hour for any contraventions – eating into your business’ profits. HSE’s website states:

“The fee payable by dutyholders found to be in material breach of the law is £129 per hour. The total amount to be recovered will be based on the amount of time it takes HSE to identify and conclude its regulatory action, in relation to the material breach (including associated office work), multiplied by the relevant hourly rate. This will include part hours.” HSE.gov.uk

Due to these heavy charges, if your garage does not keep on top of the latest legislation, a visit from HSE could become very costly, very quickly. However, the RMI are dedicated to ensuring independent garages stay ahead of any Health and Safety issues and operate at their best.

For more information on general Health and Safety guidance, HSE provides an in-depth guide to best Health and Safety practices for vehicle repair and MOT testing businesses on their website.
