Dear Member,

England’s third national lockdown came into force on 6th January, and with it came talk of another MOT extension. The DVSA and DfT have been researching whether MOTs are being carried out safely, so the IGA surveyed garages on their behalf to ask if MOT collection and delivery services were being offered to vulnerable motorists. We were delighted to see that 88% of you are currently offering these services, which will assist in avoiding another extension.

We have received feedback that levels of general service and maintenance work are currently lower than usual, and whilst we anticipate that workflow from MOT’s will be near-normal over the next couple of months, please be prepared for a significant drop-off in April as we see the impact of last year’s MOT extension take effect. The government’s furlough scheme is currently in place until the end of April should you need it.

Last year, the IGA fought hard to ensure garages could claim retail business rates relief and the grants associated with it, with many members succeeding in achieving this. With the anticipated period of reduced income ahead, we have once again written to the Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Housing Minister Robert Jenrick to request that business rates relief is extended into the 2021 to 2022 tax year.

If you haven’t yet downloaded the IGA’s new “Garage Guide to Working During COVID-19” to help you quickly find the guidance you need to run your garage throughout lockdown, it is available in the article below. This digital booklet contains direct links to government information and support schemes, plus advice and resources from the IGA, our legal team and other leading bodies.

Lastly, the new IGA database is now up and running. I apologise if you experienced a level of disruption to your Direct Debit payments in December. This issue has now been resolved and should run smoothly moving forward.

Best regards,

Stuart James
