Dear Member,

There has been a lot of coverage in the trade press recently on the subject of ‘access to information’. I genuinely think we need to keep this in perspective: motor manufacturers will do almost anything to keep market share and part sales, and consumers generally want someone local to fix their car rather than being forced to drive many miles to a main dealer. Regulations remain in place that allow garages access to information and consumers the freedom of choice to have their car repaired where they wish. In my view, it would be a very brave manufacturer that is prepared to risk their market share by dictating to consumers. As always, the IGA is on the front line working at all levels to ensure access continues for the sector.

The IGA has set up a project to investigate the UK’s most prominent online consumer work providers with the intention of creating a league table of the best and worst. Although we always emphasise that garages promote themselves and don’t need to use these ‘skimmers’ we accept that there’s a place for them. So as a compromise, we want to help garages make the right informed choice. We really need your help in understanding how these work providers deliver their services for you - your day to day experiences are of great importance. So, if you use one or more of these work providers, please send us your details in the link below. All information will be completely anonymous.

The ‘Garage Guide to GDPR’ booklet is nearing completion and will be posted out to you in the near future. This essential guide clearly explains the how’s, what’s and why’s of topics covered within the General Data Protection Regulation and it lays out each area in a simple step by step manner positioned from a garage perspective. This is underpinned by a quality assurance recognition for garages that would prefer consultant support. The GDPR will apply in the UK from 25 May 2018.

Finally, for members in the north, the Mersey Gateway bridge is now open which provides improved access to the Runcorn RMI Academy. Take a look at the courses and annual training packages available below, and call 0845 305 4230 for more details or to book a place.

Best regards,

Stuart James
