Dear Member,

We now find ourselves back in the confusing situation where Government guidance and legislation is changing daily, sometimes with hours’ notice before laws come into effect. Please be assured that we will continue to send you updates as soon as new information is released, provide daily COVID-19 briefings, and keep the COVID-19 guidance page updated on the IGA website. You can also read the latest information about your business’s legal obligations below.

We have not lobbied the Government on extending the furlough scheme as feedback indicates garages are now busy making up for time lost during lockdown, and November’s new Job Support Scheme supports flexible working. However, we will be lobbying for an extension to the Business Rate Relief scheme. Despite the current influx of work, it was apparent that when compiling data for our upcoming Garage Labour Rate Report the hourly charge out rates are not keeping up with rates of inflation, so please think carefully about whether or not there is a need to discount MOTs during these uncertain times.

Businesses now face stricter rules to keep their premises COVID-secure, and face fines of up to £10,000 if retail staff fail to wear face coverings or don’t self-isolate when told to do so. The IGA COVID-19 Compliance audits are still available as a benefit of membership, so we encourage you to book yours today and be safe in the knowledge that you are following government guidelines.

Finally, don’t forget that testers are still required to complete their MOT Annual Training despite the current circumstances, and there are six months left until the deadline on 31st March 2021. The assessment pass mark has increased to 80% this year and first-time pass rates are significantly lower than previous years, so don’t leave it too late. If you need help with training, give us a call or read the annual training article below to see how we can support your testers.

Best regards,

Stuart James
