Autodata Technical Issue 26 – Scraping noise when turning steering wheel on 2009 Citroen C4
Each month the Autodata team answers a common technical question and provides a printable document with technical diagrams to download and keep, exclusively for IGA members. This month, a garage can’t find the cause of a scraping noise on the steering wheel of a customer’s Citroen C4.
Q. We have a customer with a 2009 1.6 Citroen C4 who is complaining of a scraping noise when turning the steering wheel. We have looked at all of the steering mechanism inside the car and underneath but can’t trace the cause of the noise. Have you heard of this problem?
A. Yes, some vehicles have suffered this fault which originates from the upper steering column shaft. The upper steering column shaft lower bush may be incorrectly fitted. Disarm the SRS system by disconnecting the battery and waiting for 2 minutes. Remove the steering column assembly and locate the steering column upper shaft lower bush (Fig 1.1).
If the lower bush is not fitted correctly (Fig 1.2), use a 1 drift to gently tap the lower bush into its correct position (Fig 1.3). Refit the steering column assembly. Reconnect the battery, reset electric window functions and road test to confirm the repair has been successful.
