Autodata Technical Issue 39 – Creaking noise from front suspension in 2012 Ford Mondeo
Each month the Autodata team answers a common technical question and provides a printable document with technical diagrams to download and keep, exclusively for IGA members.
Q. We are having trouble finding the cause of a creaking noise from the front suspension when driving over uneven surfaces in a 2012 Ford Mondeo 2,2 TDCi. We have checked all the suspension components for wear and play. We have also made sure all the bolts for the front suspension and front subframe are tight and still the noise persists. Is this fault known to you?
A. Yes, the problem you are describing affects all Mondeo, S-Max and Galaxy models from 2012-2013, except models fitted with the 2,0 EcoBoost engine. The cause is excessive friction between the front subframe sections.
There is an additional nut and bolt available from Ford parts department to fit to the RH side of the front subframe to clamp the subframe sections together (Fig 1). Tighten the nut to 110 Nm (Fig 1). Road test the vehicle. This should cure the problem.
