Q. A customer’s 2010 Audi A4 2,0 TDI has a rattling noise from the underside of the vehicle when driving. We have experienced the rattling noise on road test but have yet to find the cause in the workshop. We have visually checked the underside of the vehicle but have found no faults. Are you aware of this rattling noise?
A. Yes, we are aware of a rattling noise that affects the A4 (8K2/8K5) model up to 06/14. The cause of this noise is due to the centre exhaust silencer heat shield vibrating against the floor pan. Remove the centre exhaust silencer heat shield. Thoroughly clean the area indicated on the floor pan (Fig.1).
Using bonding material, available from Audi parts department, apply a 5 mm bead of bonding material covering an area of 40 mm x 40 mm to the location indicated on the floor pan (Fig.1). Refit the centre exhaust silencer heat shield. Fix centre exhaust silencer heat shield to bonding material. Carry out road test to ensure fault has been rectified.
