Member Service Spotlight: Health and Safety

31 January 2022

In any garage business, Health and Safety compliance is of vital importance. Ensuring the safety of your technicians and your customers should be a top priority when it comes to running your business.

Luckily for independent garages, the RMI offers a Health and Safety service to members, to help you keep your business up-to-date with the complex legislative demands placed upon modern repair businesses. By utilising your RMI membership, you can keep up with latest legislation and proactively develop the safety culture in your business.

The RMI’s Health and Safety Service ensures the safety and protection of you, your staff and your customers by providing a structured assessment and monitoring system designed to cater specifically for independent garages. In order to ensure your garage remains a step ahead, the RMI will carry out an inspection of your premises, then provide an action plan to help you comply with Health & Safety and environmental legislation. After your initial inspection, we will then carry out regular and on-going visits to update your documentation and keep you up to date with latest legislation.

As part of the service, along with regular visits you’ll also receive a range of checks and equipment designed to keep your business’ Health and Safety requirements up-to date. This includes:

  • Risk Assessment
  • COSHH Assessment
  • Fire Risk Assessment
  • Equipment Service Log and Record of Maintenance
  • Health & Safety Accident Book
  • Health & Safety Legislation Updates
  • List of Substances/Data Sheet Check
  • Health & Safety Policy & Statement
  • PPE Form
  • Health & Safety Recommendations
  • Health & Safety 24hr Helpline
  • Fire Log
  • COVID-19 compliance

Fee for Intervention (FFI) charges

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), who enforce the Health and Safety at Work Act, ensure that businesses are effectively and proportionately managing their health and safety risks to workers and others. To do this, they use a range of interventions to influence, encourage and advise business and, where necessary, hold to account those who fail to meet their responsibilities.

If HSE visit your workplace and find that you are in material breach of health and safety law, you will have to pay for the time it takes them to identify what is wrong and to help you put things right. This is called a fee for intervention (FFI).

This currently costs £160 an hour. The fee will include the costs covering the time of the entire original visit. The total amount recovered will be based on the amount of time it takes HSE to identify the breach and help you put things right (including associated office work), multiplied by the hourly rate. If you don’t break the law, you won’t pay anything.

Due to these heavy charges, if your garage does not keep on top of the latest legislation, a visit from HSE could become very costly, very quickly. The RMI’s Health & Safety service provides you with peace of mind that you and your staff are safe, and that you’re complying with the law to avoid substantial fines or even the closure of your business.

Health & Safety Questionnaire

The RMI Health & Safety team’s questionnaire can help you to analyse the current H&S standards at your business. Click on the image below to view the checklist in full size and see if you are compliant. If you are not meeting any of requirements on the checklist, you are at risk of a fine from HSE.

If you have any concerns about meeting your requirements, or if you’d like to find out more about our Health & Safety Service, please call the IGA Member Helpline on 01788 225 908.
