Schools and Local Authorities Liaison Manager Update - October 2015
Every month our Schools and Local Liaison Manager will be sending updates on the work she is doing to raise the profile of the automotive industry.
September saw me attending a number of events including a Careers Fair at the Kettering Corn Exchange and an employability/interview skills day in Abington organised by Connexions. The delegates at both these events were varied which enabled me to have good and meaningful conversations with young people about a career in the Automotive Industry and the different paths that could be taken to achieve their objective.
This month I attended the two IGA Roadshows in Peterborough and Bury St Edmunds and interacted with a number of members who had queries regarding Apprenticeship’s. I also had a couple of conversations with members regarding involvement with future school events.
I also attended a Career Event to continue raising the profile of the industry, which was organised directly by Rose Bridge Academy school in Wigan. This event was aimed at year 10 and 11 with time for a drop in for year 9 students. I had some really good conversations with enthusiastic young people in year 10 who wanted to be Technicians; one of which wanted to be a Heavy Vehicle Technician. I was able to give them practical advice on how they could get an Apprenticeship and what activities would help with their application.
The National Minimum Wage rate per hour will be changing on the 1st October 2015; this will impact on the wage structure in a business. If your business is currently employing an apprentice, make sure you are paying the new minimum wage rate of £3.30 per hour, as it is a criminal offence for employers not to pay someone the National Minimum Wage.
